It was a hare-brained idea anyway

The giant Chinese elevated bus that captured the imagination of the public last year has hit the brakes.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, workers will dismantle the Transit Explore Bus (TEB) test site, which contained a 300-metre track, by the end of this month.

The vehicle will be moved to a parking lot nearby (and hopefully be sent to Sweden’s museum of failed inventions).

The prototype was first unveiled to the public last year. It measured 22-meter-long, 7.8-meter-wide and 4.8-meter-high and could carry up to 300 passengers. The biggest draw factor was that cars could drive underneath it — a much need solution for China’s frequently congested traffic conditions.

However, TEB soon found itself knee deep, or rather, wheel deep, in several scandals.

It was alleged that TEB’s developer was not transparent with investors. It also failed to inform authorities of the road tests. In addition, residents felt that it was an traffic obstacle.

Let’s hope a more brilliant inventor takes a lesson from this and devises a more viable solution.
