Tennis: Which Masters 1000 do fans hate most? Reddit thread serves up strong opinions
In tennis, the ATP Tour is a group of tennis tournaments held all over the world. It is run by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and these tournaments offer athletes different ranking points and prize money.
The Tour is divided into three levels: ATP 250, ATP 500, and ATP 1000. All athletes compete in these competitions to improve their world rankings and qualify for bigger tennis events.
Also called the Masters 1000 events, the ATP 1000 competitions are some of the most challenging and significant on the Tour. The winners of these events get 1000 ranking points, which is why these tournaments attract the best players and result in intense tennis matches. Moreover, these events are just below the Grand Slams in difficulty.
The current ATP 1000 tournaments take place in Cincinnati, Indian Wells, Madrid, Miami, Monte Carlo, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, and Toronto/Montreal.
A curious Redditor started a discussion on Reddit by asking the question, “What’s your least favourite M1000, and why?”
Tennis fans gave their answers and opinions on the post. One Redditor admitted: “Miami because of the awful stadium and cursed vibes. A huge downgrade from the previous venue… Monte Carlo is probably my favourite now because the one-week format is so vastly superior.”
Another Redditor agreed that Miami is the least liked of all events due to the stadium being ‘awful’, and the ‘stands are never full.’
“Miami is probably my least favourite Masters 1000, and the main reason is the venue, the move from Key Biscayne to the Hard Rock Stadium. The old Crandon Park site had a unique charm, and the Hard Rock... it just doesn’t feel like a tennis-first venue. It's the nostalgia talking, probably, but now it looks like a pop-up event at the Stadium. Idk,” said another tennis fan.
One Redditor also commented that Toronto is the "least prestigious Masters" and added: “Parking is a nightmare, and the new two-week format means more top players are gonna skip it. I've got nothing bad to say about Montreal. Far better venue and location”
“Toronto's got a pretty cool setup this year. Gone to a day and night sesh and it's been a great time. Regardless of some missing players, it's been well done and fun for fans. Last couple of years though, prob least fav,” another Redditor stated.
Another commenter, however, claimed Paris was the worst because "players are burnt out" by the time the event started.
Regardless of the fans' least favourite ATP 1000 event, tennis players make sure that they are physically and mentally prepared for every tournament’s level of difficulty. Each athlete will do their best to deliver an impressive match performance for their supporters.
